Yes, yes, yes I made a Chocolate Self Saucing Pudding in Summer, when it is really a traditional Winter dessert! Why? Because my son wanted to make chocolate cake and this is the easiest recipe ever, plus it is delicious cold too.
This recipe is from my Mum’s Women’s Weekly Recipe Card Library from the early 1980’s that she gave me. I have reduced the amount of sugar and changed the cooking time to suit.
INGREDIENTS
1 Cup Self Raising Flour
2 Tbs Cocoa
1 Tbs Butter, melted
1/2 Tsp Salt
1/2 Cup Milk
1/2 Cup Sugar
1 Tsp Vanilla Essence
Sauce
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup Cocoa
1 3/4 Cups Hot Water
LETS PUT IT ALL TOGETHER
1. Place the flour, salt, cocoa and sugar into a medium bowl. Mix to combine. Stir in milk, vanilla essence and melted butter. Mix until smooth. Spread evenly unto a lined baking dish. A 20cm cake tin works well.
2. Sprinkle the brown sugar and cocoa over the pudding. Gently pour the hot water over the top.
3. Bake in a 180 degree celcius oven for 45 minutes.
Serve with cream or ice cream.
Looks delicious! Will try it tomorrow. Thank you Amanda for all the lovely recipes you share. 🙂
Amanda, did I read it right? The hot water is poured on top of the batter? I am puzzled
Hi Michelle, you sure do. That’s how you get the sauce. If you give the recipe a try it will all make sense.
hi
Was wondering which amount of cocoa you sprinkle onto of the batter
1/4 cup. The sauce ingredients are listed last under the heading sauce.
My mum (and now i) have been making this for yrs! Soooooo good and easy too. Our version is cooked for 7 mins in the microwave, but exactly the same result. Now i want some…
I have cooked this recipe in the microwave. Just use a microwave safe dish to put it all together, then cook on high for 5 to 8 min, depending on your microwave. Had it last night, sooo good.
Thanks for letting me know it works in the microwave. I will give it a go next time when I’m in hurry.
My only variation is to add 1 teaspoon of instant coffee to the hot water and make it a little bit mocha 🙂 love this recipe so much!
Does anyone have any suggestions for something to use other than brown sugar in sauce??? thank you
We add 1/2 teaspoon of coffee to the (hot) water that you pour over to make it a little different.
Delicious! Great tip about lining the dish with grease proof paper.
